Rested and energized or stiff and tired?
Hey there! How was your day today? Did you wake up feeling rested and energized? Or were you feeling like you had to pull the weight of the world out of bed with you? Were you feeling stiff and tired, like it was hard to get moving?
I am frequently telling my clients about how our body is always sending us messages and how we need to listen and respond to those messages. Guess what…if you are waking up feeling stiff and tired, your body is telling you that there is something going on and you need to listen. It could be your joints and muscles need a little more love.
Let’s start with a little reflection:
When was the last time you took time to stretch – I mean really do some serious, targeted stretches? When did you last do any weight-bearing exercise? How about going for a walk?
See, your body was designed for movement. So building movement into your daily routine will help you in so many ways. Stretching is an amazing way to energize and refresh. I love to start my morning with 20 minutes of Pilates or Yoga – it stretches everything out and works some good core muscles. This is great for flexibility, stability and balance. If I go too many days in a row without my morning stretches, I start to notice it in how I feel.
After my Pilates or Yoga I will tack on another 10 minutes to work with some free weights to help maintain and build muscle – this helps me to keep my metabolism up, and be able to do more throughout the day without hurting myself or feeling too tired. Just think of all the lifting you do as you perform your tasks each day! I used to put my back out all the time until I started stretching and doing some weight-bearing exercise regularly.
In addition to stretching and some weight-bearing exercise, getting out for a good brisk walk is great for your cardiovascular system and for reducing belly fat. It is also a wonderful support for your digestive system.
Rise to the challenge
I know fitting in exercise can be a challenge – try getting up before the rest of your family and getting your 20 to 30 minutes in then. It really is a great way to start the day! I find if I leave it to later in the day, I get busy with other things or can come up with a dozen excuses to not bother. Make exercise an appointment in your calendar and keep it – you are a priority! Find more motivation to get moving in my post: I Hate Working Out.
If you are experiencing significant fatigue, aches, pains or stiffness, you may also want to look at your diet. Your digestive system probably needs some attention and you likely need to reduce the inflammation in your body. It could even be a food reaction.
